Id just like to say ..

To anyone doing this outside .. on stands .. in the wet and rain then my hat off to you all .

I hate doing this in the warm .. on a ramp and with every tool needed !

Agreed, a complete arseache of a job.

Just did a similar job to replace all my corroded brackets and flange bolts and was tempted to do the boxes but decided against it thankfully.

Couldn't figure out how to get the cats out due to the oxygen sensors and it was doing my head in trying to hammer the flange bolts out in a tiny space...if only I twigged I could have unplugged the oxygen sensor from the engine bay :frustrated:

I've just finished removing mine today.
I also wish I'd paid some other sucker to do it.
Had to cut the left hand box into several bits to get it off, not one bolt came out cleanly.
I had to drill out 3 fixings on the bumper. On the heatshields I sheared one and rounded another!
I'm now waiting for the last stainless bolts to arrive before fitting the new ones.
Glad it's over

You're all crazy...... but in a very good way. Hats off to you all. :worship:

Came across this the other day whilst searching for something else...anyone have any thoughts on dissolving broken studs? Seems a lot easier if it'll work

On a side note i find this chap very entertaining!

Not replacing the whole system myself but can echo the heat shield fixings particularly under the side of the bumper and in the wheel arch. Had to Dremel the nuts off on four of them but managed to save the threads for stainless steel nuts and washers to go back on. Fortunately all the bumper screws came away with no effort, new ones going back on.
Started this to get the badly corroded exhaust flange bolts off, almost finished two to go and should be putting everything back on the car later in the week. Needed new bumper heat shield brackets, the originals were completely shot after 19 years. A challenging task but glad I've done it and it will be worth it in the long run.
