My GT3 restoration and upgrade thread

Hi, yes I mean for the stock GT3 wheels.

When you say standard GT3 sizes, do you mean for the stock wheels or the aftermarket ones I am going to get? As my standard wheels have MPSS on them? For the proposed new wheel sizes.( 9x 18 front and 11 x 18 rear) ..I can only get the MPSS to fit the front. I was going for 295/30/18 at the rear but no MPSS available. But cup 2's are......Going 245/40/18 fronts and both MPSS & cup 2's available.

What do others use in this situation ?

If you can find them, I've been very impressed with the Pirelli Trofeo R. They have more grip & more feel than the Cup2. MPSS are an OK performance tyre but really don't do that well on track and leave quite a lot to be desired in the grip department too. On the plus side they perform well in the wet & seem to last ages.

ive got mpss on my 6.3 '3 and cant say i rate them highly tbh, i dont have the skills of some members on here but can tell what i do and dont like.

i find the mpss quite squidgy and the rear end more 'playable' or it feels its more playable as the sidewall isnt as stiff as the old ps2's i replaced them for.

They do get up to temp/psi quite quickly so lately ive been running around with the pressures close to stock oem pressure suggestion (39 psi) then the extra pressure from the heat stiffens up the side wall.

the mpss is being replaced this year so if you canw ait, get the PS4 or whatever its called or as its just dry weather driving you are doing, go with the Cup 2's. I went SS as i drive mine in all weathers

Thanks Nick, do you know where I can get the Trofeo R in 245/40/18 & 295/30/18 sizes please? I cant seem to find them....

And as the choice in this size seems to be cup 2's or the Trofeo R if available, or the Toyo proxes r888r which would you recommend out of the those? I am using the car mostly for fast road driving plus some track days. In the wet only if caught out in it.....

thanks

Nick - where have you managed to obtain these from ?
How do they compare to Cup2's in damp / wet / heavy rain ?

I did say "if you can find them"!

Being an old hand at getting hold of specialist tyres, I have a tyre shed in the garden which I stock up over the winter, that being the time when these sort of tyres can be found & are often cheaper than when you actually need them in the summer...

I got mine from tyreleader.co.uk but mytyres.co.uk often have them too.

Demon Tweeks is another source but due to Perelli's weird production schedules, it's pot luck as to when any stockist will actually have stock.

@markturner - I have a set of R888R in 18" mounted but as yet unused. I will be trying them at some point this year, probably when it is a bit warmer.

Thanks Nick, what are you running currently on the GT3?

I'm on 19" Trofeo R's on the 996. I'm on Supersports on the 997.

See I was advised to stick to 18's when ordering my new wheels, but obviously you have much better choice in 19's.....

What wheels do you run on your 996 GT3?

Same size wheels as the 997.1 GT3: 8.5" & 12" I think they're ET43 & 68 but they are definitely the 997.1 GT3 sizes. Tyres are 245/35 & 305/30.

I use OZ Ultraleggera wheels and they actually weigh a good deal less than the (very heavy) OEM 18" wheels so the ride quality isn't really any different to 18".

My suspension is completely non-factory though & that helps...

997.1 GT3 -

19 x 8.5 ET 53
19 x 12 ET 68

Thanks RoRo. I run a 10mm spacer on the fronts hence me thinking ET43.

@markturner: If you want to give Cup2s on 19" a try for a bit, I have a set in the garage you are welcome to borrow.

7.1 also has a 5mm spacer on the rear from the factory....considering its a bespoke wheel for that car you have to think somebody got the original spec wrong?

Just as well; they wouldn't fit on the 996 if they were ET63. As it is, I've had to roll the arches a tad to get the Pirellis to fit. Their profile sticks out further than other tyres I've tried.
