High mileage 997

For the past 8 or 9 months, my Autotrader search has been bringing up a 2009 997.2 Carrera S manual with FSH which has dropped from £33k to £29795. The downside is that the car has travelled 94000 miles. Would that put you off if the history is correct and the car was PPI ? I'm not buying umtil November, but this car is 5k below my budget and is a gen 2. Any other higher mileage cars out there ?

It would put ME off because, in the UK, the average annual mileage for a watercooled 911 is only c7k miles a year so 94k on a 7 year old car is pretty high.

There's so many out the with lower miles and 100k is still a massive psychological barrier for too many buyers that the trade value would plummet.

That's probably why the sale price has fallen and it still hasn't sold.

If I was planning to keep it for a long time ........... :dont know: ..... but I doubt it.

I would put me off. TBH it wouldn't come up in a search with me as I cap mileage very low. Low miles is one of my key requirements with a car. The fact is, no matter the service history, mileage wears components out, and things simply deteriorate with use.
I would rather pay a few thousand more for a low mileage car. Even to the point of buying an older car with less miles.

A car with close to 100,000 miles will start having niggles and failures which is par for the course, but causes headaches I for one can't be bothered with.

I too am a low mileage buyer, although I have a feeling there will be a few who will suggest service history is more important and it's better for a car to be driven than sat in the garage etc.

To me there's a balance, I don't care how well/frequently a 100k car has been serviced, that seat is likely to have a bum print and it would take a fastidious number of owners to have kept internal wear and tear to a minimum. Mechanical componentry wears out due to use more than lack of use...assuming car sitting cosseted in a garage.

I't's all about your budget.

I brought a one owner 95K car with full OPC history for £26K.

My reasoning was that for my £26K budget I could have a much lower milage gen1 with a M96 engine (along with the bore score and IMS paranoia - which was justified for me after replacing the engine on my my 996 two years ago) or a Gen2 with 95K for the same money.

I spoke to a few Indi's and they all said the same, Gen2 engine is pretty much bullet proof.

So I pulled the trigger and got a 3.6 PDK that runs like a dream and feels like its done less than half the miles of my old 996, with more power, better MPG, Lower Tax, Touch screen, LED's.... The gen2 interior is built so much better than my old car and still looks fresh - no saggy bum seats here thank you very much. In fact it looks pretty mint in and out. No wear on the switches etc.

I've just hit 100,000 and it's running like a swiss watch.

A high milage gen2 will have already taken the big hit on depreciation, so you can drive it every day with the worry that it will drop £10K in re-sale value if you use it. Because of this I'm not worried about putting miles on it and get to enjoy it every day.

On top of that it looks like I've spent £10K more than I have

It depends on the use: 94k miles suggests a lot of time on the motorway on someone's daily, which is fine, compared to a lower mileage of a city car...

You might want to ask if the front end has been resprayed, as that might be a clue to it's likely use.

I tend to think we all get a bit obsessed by mileage, but a lower mileage does of course help if you plan to sell.

As 911Virgin say "Buy on condition not milage".
A high milage motorway car will have much better engine/box etc than a low milage city car.

I'd rather buy a 100k mile motorway car than a 30k mile city car. There will be far less wear and tear on the components. These cars revel in being used, you get more problems with garage queens than high milers. Check to see if anything has been replaced, clutch , rads etc, and if needs be, get the front end re sprayed so it looks like new.I think there is something really cool about owning a 200k mile 911. A car that can tell stories and has had a good life.

And the stories you have by putting 100K of them on it 😜

I would rather a high miles Gen 2 than a low mile Gen 1

Back in November I found a 997.2 S at Cameron Porsche . 50k new clutch, discs and pads all round, Aircon radiators.
PSE, sport button, heated leather, Bluetooth etc. I upped my budget to find the car I really wanted.
One car I rejected from a non Porsche specialist appeared healthy superficially, however a PPI revealed around 8k of work plus a repaired rear quarter.
Had the car I mentioned been around in November, I'd have taken a chance after a PPI .
Les, your car is testament to how young and fit a 100k cherished car looks. I'm looking forward to putting plenty of miles on mine and growing old disgracefully with it. :D

That was the decision I made.

Gen 2 with high motorway miles, fewer cold starts/short journeys.

I wouldn't totally disregard it, if it was me I'd try and find some history, do some digging see if you can find who put the miles on. I spoke to the last owner of the turbo and he was more than happy to discuss the car. Obviously I bought from a dealer but when going through the invoices before I bought it I found his number and rang him, it gave me some confidence when making my decision. Good luck!
