993 rear heated screen - replacing the relay

so...
heated screen stopped working a while ago and following advice on here I ordered a generic 53 relay to replace it.
Fitted in today and now the heated screen switch on the dash won't stay on.

I can only presume that the relay isn't working as the previous one did and therefore there isn't anything for the switch to switch so it's not engaging.

Any thoughts please?
do I need to buy the proper relay at £60ish?!

thanks :)

of course - it might not be a faulty relay after all, I've checked the fuse and that's fine, so not sure where to go after that.......

Rear defog relay is not a simple/standard relay. It contains the timer electronics as well as two relays.
Cheers,
