60 minutes of Porsche Ownership

Thank you for your input so far. I like to think I'm in a strong position, I have the law very firmly on my side with the Consumer Rights Act 2015. I am entitled to a 100% refund within the first 30 days and I shall happily request this but, I could get a car with rebuilt engine and that would put my mind at ease over the next few years.

The (after market) warranty is in my name and if I do walk away this will put the financial burden on the dealer; I imagine he is well aware of this. If the warranty company doesn't want to foot the bill for a whole engine rebuild then the dealer may want to make a contribution to ensure I am happy and accept the car with the Hartech rebuild I want.

If I go elsewhere, I could be buying a car with a problem around the corner and it does appear that I'm not very good at picking Porsches!

I will wait and see what the dealer says on Monday and then share the news!

Really feel for you - not a great start to 911 ownership :nooo:

If it was me and I was given the option of a full refund, I would take it and find another car.

Who the warranty with and are we talking well known Porsche dealer or generic car dealer?

It's with a (good quality) second hand car dealer and it's a generic warranty - you know the ones that are almost not worth the paper they are written on.

My eyes are WIDE open with this!

That's a hell of an oil leak!

Really feel for you, who needs this on the first day I'd be heartbroken:(

I suppose you really need to know what as happened before you make any call on what you do next unless you just wash your hands a give it back .

Personally I'd only keep the car if you could control who does the rebuild and have full say on the extent of the repair. Anything less will leave you in a world of uncertainty and quite frankly who wants that when you can just hand it back.:nooo:

Terrible news!

Clearly the dealer has bought a lemon. Out of interest, did you get a PPI done on the car? There could other age related problems lurking!

My advice, don't let them pass a lemon on to you! If you are still keen, seek a full refund and leave the dealer with the hassle of the repair. Ask them to give you first refusal after they get a Hartech rebuild. Good luck!

That volume of oil and in that location then i would expect the ims bearing to have failed .

If it IS all covered by warrenty then a rebuild would be great .. but knowing most warrenty companys then i expect some or all of the cost wont be covered .

A hartech rebuild is well worth having, if that's what they are actually prepared to cough up for then there's complete peace of mind thereafter.

The fact that the engine has gone twice on this car isn't a great advert for either the original lump or the previous rebuild.

The previous engine issue was bore scoring, I was attracted to the car as this issue had been taken care of with a sizeable invoice. The current issue is, I think, an IMS bearing failure and I'm pretty sure it is unrelated.

It really is a nice car but, as others have said, there are plenty of other nice cars out there.

I will try to be patient and see if I can get what I want, if not, I will get a refund.

And, no I didn't get a PPI - I know my motors so it would have been a waste of money.

If it is the IMS bearing at least you will have the small consolation of knowing that no PPI in the world would have foreseen it happening.

NB: I've read of IMS bearing failure several times before but don't recall massive oil loss being a result. :dont know:

EDIT: I have now - see post from demort below.

My biggest worry about your car would be how long you drove it for with insufficient oil in the engine. I wouldn't keep it without anything less than another rebuild.

PPI wouldn,t have helped as you have to remove the box and flywheel to even get at the bearing to check it.

All that would have been pointed out would be an oil leak but even that might not have been there .. they can just let go.

I expect on box removal then the 13mm nuts still on the shaft will fall out of the box .

It might NOT be that but that volume of oil would strongly indicate it is along with the assosiated noise you herd .

EDIT ..

For T8 .. ive seen it several times .. to the point the recovery trucks have to wash their bed off before going .. reason is in my above post ... a rather large hole basically .

Noted :thumb: T8

I was traveling under 20 mph when it let go and as soon as I stopped, the car was 'unwell' all over the road. The dealer's (non specialist) engineers did initially say an oil solenoid was the source of the oil leak but, at the point of failure, there was a chilling death rattle as the car rolled to a stop.
