Trade sale advice

I've been reading this forum for a few months and watching the classifides for a while, looking to buy my first Porsche. Ive seen lots of great advice on the forum and wondered if anyone has experience of trade sales.

I've decided a 997 is what I want and have been to see a couple which are possibilities.

I spotted an advert on the internet that is really close to my perfect specification, and almost within my budget and from a well known specialist. However the advert was pretty poorly written and pictures were limited and poor quality. Plus the car was not on their main website.

I've enquired if it is still available and been told that the car is available but it was mistakenly advertised to the public and was only intended to be advertised to the trade at that price. So if I'm interested I can take it at the trade price but as a 'trade sale' with no warranty etc.

Or they will prep it, put a warranty on it but advertise it for £8k more (which will definitely take it out of my budget).

Now this sounds a bit fishy to me, plus when I run a mot history on the number plate on the car and there is no history (plate not recognised).

What do people think? Is this normal? The price is not that cheap, but it is keen. However I was looking for a low stress way into 911 ownership.

If the car is a Gen 1 997 you really could be opening up a massive cans of worms for yourself.

If the dealer is looking to trade it out there will almost certainly be a reason. Another trader will take a punt and if it all goes Pete Tong can at least write it off against tax etc. For a private punter it's a massive gamble.

If you want to save money look for a private sale. At least you'll get a chance to speak to the previous owner/driver.

You say the trade sale is not 'that cheap'. Why not? It should be. The dealer will have paid absolute bottom dollar for it and that's all another trade will give him.

The MOT thing doesn't mean a thing. If it's had a private plate or plates on it (as many Porsches have) the MOT history can be difficult to track or even non-existent.

Strictly speaking a car can't be sold to a member of the public under trade terms, you cannot be expected to be sophisticated enough to enter the agreement forfeiting all consumer rights....

They can sell it as non runner to you (this would be very high risk on your part)

£8k is big spread on what I assume is a mid £20k gen 1 (between trade and retail)

Low stress and low cost Porsche purchase are mutually exclusive terms ..buy the best warranted car you can find if you want low stress/ assurances.

cheers
