911 3.2 Cutting out when warming up

Afternoon all,

hoping somebody can offer some advice/words of wisdom. I recently bought my 911 3.2 (1986 model year). It has had a full engine rebuild by a Porsche specialist. I have done about 1500-1800 miles in it since I bought it. However, recently it has developed a minor fault in that when I start the car and leave it to idle it will cut out after about a minute. Sometimes it will restart no problem. Other times it takes several attempts to fire up. This behaviour has only recently started to exhibit itself. I am assuming it is some sort of fuel starvation issue. The fuel and air filters are all new, I can hear the fuel pump working and there is plenty of fuel in the car. The only other reason I could think this was happening was perhaps some sort of engine management issue, but don't know a great deal about that side of the car yet. As I say any help will be gratefully accepted.

Cheers

Check your oil filler cap is tight.
Although the car should run with the oil cap off so you can check the oil, I've found mine stalls exactly as you've described.
If you keep the revs up it drives fine, but dies at idle.

Hi Chockymonster,

many thanks for the suggestion. I will have a look at the oil filler and make sure it is tight.

Try a spare DME relay. A cheap part, easily replaced, under left front seat.

Other possibilities I've seen mentioned in forums:

- Both main battery terminal connections tight
- Fuel pump fuse in main fuse board clean
- Earth cables between left inlet manifold and left inner wing (behind fuel filter)
- Cylinder head temperature sensor
- Ignition coil resistance
- Distributor cap and rotor
- Cylinder head temp sensor
- Flywheel speed and reference sensors
- VFM (air flow meter)

My 86 3.2 had awful cut-outs/coughs in the early getting-to-know-each-other days. Cause turned out to be the flywheel speed sensor gone wrong, it was activating the rev limiter at any revs anytime. Your gremlin is probably somewhere on the list above - good luck.

rotted earth strap maybe,

who sold it to you? What are they saying, regarding warranty?

i love 3.2s.

Dear All,

have swapped the DME relay and it seems to have done the trick. Would imagine the one that was on there had been in use for quite some while looking at it.

many Thanks for the help and suggestions :)
