Y2K's arctic silver 2001 C2 3.4

I also am in Hampshire (Fleet) and have a silver GT3 aero'd 996. Mine is a very similar spec to yours but with the addition of the option 220 locking diff and the early dual row IMS that is considered reliable in comparison to the later single row.

I've had it on track and my brakes took only about four laps of Bedford before the fluid boiled. I also found the back end to be spectacularly flighty, but I believe that's down to the worn LSD not doing it's thing under braking, and the M030 dampers being past their best.

These silver aerokit cars are a bit common! :)

Been a few years since I visited Bedford, I may go in 2017 as it's the safest track for experimentation. My car is actually very stable under braking (rev-match / H&T), obviously it can be provoked with trail-braking or aggressive steering input.

I wanted LSD but they're rare option. When the clutch requires changing I will look at option of after-market, though I believe it's big ££££££.

I think an aftermarket one is about £1k fitted. A clutch pack one as per OEM rather than a geared one (Quaife etc) is better as when in good health it works under deceleration as well as acceleration.

My car was much more of a handful than it should have been at Bedford if everything was in good health. I used to race single seaters and am familiar with advanced driving and suspension tuning and the eagerness with which my car was trying to swap ends was very.. non-standard.

Nice one. :thumb:

I'm just a novice really when it comes to 911/RWD; previous track experiences were all in FWD cars.

Not updated for a while; had the car sorn'd for three months during winter, then fitted a new Bosch S4 battery. Also bought a set of Dansk exhaust as the old ones were toasted. This was back in March before Alex's thread  or I would have looked into other brands.

Anyway, last week just came back from a three weeks Europe trip:

Harwich ferry to Hook of Holland (pic removed)

Then drove through Germany and Denmark; fuel stop at a mini Shell in Denmark (pic 1)

Ferry #2 at Hirtshals, Denmark, to Norway (pic removed)

Sightseeing at Heddal Stave Church near Notodden, Norway (pic 2)

After attending friends' wedding, then onto Oslo for a few days (pic removed)

Trainning for Channel 4's 'The Jump' (pic 3)

We bumped into the King and Prince of Norway leaving the Palace :D (pic removed)

Electric cars are very popular in Norway; here're a couple of 'Buddies' (pic removed)

Quick service at OPC Oslo (ok not really) (pic 4)

Left Oslo to Trollhattan, Sweden and stopped by the Saab Museum. The collection is fairly small but Trollhattan made a nice lunch stop. (pic 5)

Bumped into this lady; she and her twin sister were models for Saab in the 70s! Here she was holding an origional brochure in which she was at the cover. (pic removed)

Then to Gothenburg for three days including a visit to the Volvo Museum, which has a fantastic collection. (pic 6)

Then back to Denmark with a quick stop at Lund, Sweden (pic 7)

Stopped at Malmo before crossing the Oresund bridge (which cost EUR56) (pic 8)

Then a few days at Copenhagen and day trip to Hillerod and Helsingor
(pic 9)

From Denmark then to Hamburg with a quick service at OPC Hamburg (ok no) (pics removed)

Visited the Automuseum Prototyp (ok) and Miniatur Wunderland (awesome) also. (pics removed)

After leaving Hamburg, visited Kinderdijk after recommendation from fellow 911uk member. (pic 10)

Then finally home after 2458 miles in 21 days (pic removed)

The car performed exceptionally; the only issues were the fuel cap emergency release cable came loose and 'ticking noise' (non engine/gearbox related) after a 160+ mph high speed run in Germany (more below).

After coming back home, had a new set of tyres fitted (Yokohama Advan Neova AD08R) and the car is currently at my mechanic's for its annual service, MOT, new exhausts, brake lines (HEL), pads (Pagid RS5) and bits and bobs.

Being serviced (pic removed)

About the 'ticking noise'; it became noticeable whilst 'coasting' after the high speed runs in Germany. My mechanic traced it to 'loose split-rim bolts'. These GT3 wheels were refurbished in 2013 by previous owner; the car was used very sparingly since then til my ownership. It would seem the refurb was not done to the highest standard as some of the bolts were loose, some threads damaged with a few bolts 'super-glued' back on the the split-rims. Shocking. (pic removed)

New bolts (80 of them) have been ordered and the damaged threads will be 're-sleeved'.

The car should be back at the end of next week, and then it'll be Scotland (NC500-ish) in July.

That's all for now......

What a fantastic trip - great photos and the 996 looks lovely! :worship:

A 911 is built for these long runs - as evidenced by Poppopbangbang.

Shocking re. those bolts, I hope it wasn't anyone who has been recommended on here who did the work?

I only wish my other half fancied road trip like that, but then I'd have to take the kid and drive something with 4 seats...

Never mind, only have to wait another 10 years or so before the kids have gone!

Cheers! Yes these 996s are strong oxen :)

No not them. I'll wait for the final verdict from my mechanic but the wheels were refurbished by a company in Swindon.

I didn't think it was - my wheels were refurbished by them for the PO...

Nice one Y2K!

Inspiring stuff.....

Got my car back at the weekend from my mechanic after servicing and repairs.

The combination of AD08R and Pagid RS5 pads are outstanding; ABS pretty much refuses to kick in.

Had the wheels balanced this morning following the wheels repair; also passed MOT for another year. Almost 83000 miles now.

Scotland next!

Scotland

Just came back after a week long road trip in Scotland. The last time I visited Scotland was in Sept 2014, and I have to say this trip was as good, if not better than my last trip.

We mainly stayed in the Highlands and got to as far north as Dunnet Head and John O'Groats (a first for me), but on my way back I had a detour in the west Borders and north Pennines and then a day in York.

The car was superb; it was as comfortable in attacking single track twisties, as fast flowing well sighted A/B roads. It really is a marvelous driver's car.

My firends (owners of Caterham R400, BMW E46 M3 CSL, 968CS) had a drive in my car and they were equally impressed, describing it as 'amazing' and 'seemed to be brilliant at everything'. I was also lucky enough to have a go in the very raw Caterham R400.

The car ended up doing 1985 miles in this trip. Only two things went wrong; the side repeater fell off after one too many big jumps on single-track road, and the CDR 22 stereo decided to stop working after day 3. :dont know:

Some pictures..... (in reverse order  )

Great stuff buddy!!

Looks like you had a great time. I love the pictures.
We went up there last month. I just jumped in my mate Craig's car for the craic, rather than drive around on our own for 3 days.

We crammed a lot in mind so I'd like to go back with my wife and take in more of the sights at some point.

We met our mates from Teeside at Hartside, which is an hour west from us and an hour and a half north west for them. We all set off at about lunchtime.

Got up to and over Applecross for the first nights camping.

Official Porsche camping kettle...... not.

Couple more -

They take the sign down at John O Groats as you have to pay for a picture with it. Booo!
Craig gave us a pole dance anyway. :D

Anyway, sorry for the hijack. Good times!!
Like I say I'll get back up there with the wife at some point, then out to Europe again in a year or two.

What's next then? More trackdays?
Keep the pics coming either way. One of my favourite threads on here. :thumb:

Edited to add -
I don't know if your Stereo is repairable but there's a one here on Gumtree, I noticed last night, if it's any good. No contact to me though so apply the usual due diligence.

Forgot to add the link -

Once again, good to see these cars getting used and enjoyed rather than trickled out on a Sunday polished and returned to another month in the garage.

Great to hear some comparative comment from owners of cars I would also love to drive and own as well. Mostly, my opinions of these cars are shaped by a few motoring journalists, which isn't to say that is wrong, I'd just like to hear some owners opinions as well sometimes.

Good work Y2K......and Marky911

@Mark, I recognize a couple of locations  It was my first visit to the Pennines; great roads and the traffic was very kind to me.

Thanks for the link, I'll try disconnecting the battery first, hopefully it'll be a cheap fix and I won't have to buy a replacement. Shame as mine looks perfect cosmetically.

Hoping to fit in three track days this year...... but not sure yet. No more road trip planned though.

@James, cheers mate. Like you I mostly rely on magazine reviews / YouTube / forums etc to form opinions on different cars. I am always keen to get my friends to drive mine properly for comparison.

Need to clean the car now.

On another note, anyone considering Pagid RS* pads, they squeal a little at low speed / walking pace. #becauseracecar
