So I purchased this a couple of years ago and last year done all the conversion to euro specs etc. I was really worried about driving it in the UK because of the salt etc. The car was restored, body paint was really good, interior all done and engine and transmission all rebuilt. With just under 42k miles it was really nice. Full matching numbers, COA, and full history folder.

But this thing about driving it was winding me up.

Whilst the the underneath looked good, it was covered in a black stipple covered material. We found a couple of places that looked suspect. That was it - no point in having a car to look at imo but at the same time know what salt and road grime does to these.

So so had a chat with Porsche. They suggested removing all the black stipple and having a real look at what was there. So we took the engine, transmission and fuel tank out - 3 hours the lot - these cars are so simple back then. Put it on a trailer and off to Porsche.

Get a a call from them a week later. Would you like to pop round and discuss Surprised

This is car was only ever going to Porsche body shop - it is a perfect car in every way with low mileage , folder of receipts etc , matching numbers etc.

So shown around what they found - bodywork itself and paint was fine - but the floor had been repaired in four places and the front section had also been repaired. It could be repaired properly but it would always be a repair. Mmmm didn't want that.

So on the phone to Porsche to see if by any chance we could get an original floor for it and to my amazement after a call to Germany they found one.

In the end Porsche quoted me 300 hours to replace the entire floor. It has been painted how it left the factory but has have a modern layer underneath to add the correct protection. I asked would I be able to drive it all year around and the answer was yes - they are giving me a full warranty on the job. The new finish will give me that reassurance.

These jobs could be done cheaper but I think there is good long term value in it being done by Porsche and most important I won't be worried about it.

Anyway fast forward to last month and it is all done. Thankfully I took a fixed price on the job - let's just say the work involved was more than anticipated. Now to get the interior back, engine and transmission and enjoy.

Here are 493 pics - you would never have guessed the hidden issues underneath.

That underseal is evil stuff for hiding problems. I remember years ago when it would be applied to new cars. Within a couple of years water would get behind it and the rot would set in. You did not see it until chunks started to fall off.

Fantastic car and great to see it receive such care (and money)

Thanks for the nice comments. Couple of more photos.

Planning on putting it back together in the next month when we find some time.

We had plans to convert to manual from the sportomatic since it is a simple job ( actually many of these cars were converted when the sportomatic went wrong because people don't understand how to resolve) but now been advised that since it is original under no circumstances do the conversion - with limited numbers of them remaining, these have dramatically increased in price.

Not sure how long I will keep her - probably only ever going to drive her 4 or 5 times a year on sunny days Cool

1993 Porsche 964 Anniversary

PostPosted: Tue Jul 19, 2016 8:20 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

That takes me back and looks near identical to my old '69 911T I owned in 1984 including the narrow wheels and chrome hub caps. I paid £1,300 (chipped them in true zing style from £1,500 Grin ) and whilst mine had a MOT and was a runner naturally yours in in a lot better condition Thumb

Strangely enough back then I did manage to move it on for a 'modest' profit Wink (although I'd wish I'd kept it however when it rained the rear passengers would get a wet arse what )

Starting point is to get COA for the car from Porsche. Then at least you can see what the precise spec for colour was, what options. Too many of these cars have been repainted, retrimed away from original colour.

Then I would get a full inspection on the car.

We will finish our car early next week. We found on the car a number of issues from the previous owner e.g. the wrong fuel pump was fitted, the wrong distributer etc. Things that were not obvious and it is very difficult to find sources for the correct information. I think lots of times these cars go through rebuilds with different components used for various reasons and maybe the difficulty of getting original (even second hand parts).

These cars are quite simple in design. Most of the time diagnosing is not the problem. We had this with the heater not working for example, and you cannot get another motor, so you have to strip the motor and rebuild. Everything is possible.

In terms of paint, then Porsche Approved Body Shop will be able to get information on how it was painted - specifically talking about how it left the factory in terms of paint for floor, wheel arches and underneath.

So starting point would be COA and then full inspection.

And be prepared for a long project depending on condition. Trying to fix things takes time unfortunately.

Welcome to give me a call or email and if I can help in anyway I will.

Ken
