I'm looking at getting my first 911 and was wondering
The pros and cons of both private and trade

If you know what you're doing and can de-risk the purchase to a level you're comfortable with, I would think a private purchase could be very rewarding, you may well find a car where the owner is a true enthusiast so you're buying the seller as well as the car. You should get more for your money as the same car should cost ~20% more from a retailer.

If you don't know what you're doing and can't de-risk the purchase to a level you're comfortable with, a purchase from a reputable retailer will bring the protection of well chosen quality stock, assured provenance as well as after sale protection and therefore completely justifies the retailers margin.

The worse case IMO is to buy a car from a dealer, pay the 20% retail premium but get poor quality stock that would not be accepted by a reputable dealer, dubious provenance and ropey after sale protection. Just like a private sale, buy the seller as well as the car.

Personally, I would consider a private sale having become sufficiently clued up, there are plenty of cars put up on this forum by members that have caught my eye, but my first call would be 911 Virgin having had nothing but excellent pre and post sale service from them and I know the whole transaction would be painless, professional and friendly.

There are a relatively small number of other independent specialist retailers that are in the same league going by the feedback others give on this forum plus buying from an official Porsche Centre comes with the best warranty in the business of course.
