How negotiable are dealers?

I'm going to be buying the car in cash so not tied to a dealer. I'm not against buying a car privately as you get a bit more for your money. I would want to get it thoroughly checked over by the AA before spending that sort of money though.

At the moment I'm looking on autotrader and piston heads for trade or private. It would be good to find two similar spec cars to use to negotiate but at the moment there are hardly any out there. I thought there would be a more even split between auto and manual, I might have to try to drive an auto to see what's it's like. I'm pinning my hopes on few coming into the market qfter the 718 launch in sept.

Other than auto trader and piston heads is there anyone else you would recommend looking? I'm located down south but will travel to see cars.

A few random comments from me.

You won't find much choice on the private market as most sellers of that ilk of car don't want the hassle of dealing with 'tyre-kickers'.

These days cash isn't king. Dealers often make more money through arranging finance so don't need to offer cash buyer discounts.

Don't bother with an AA check. Get a PPI done by a Porsche specialist.

DO drive an auto but make sure to try it in 'M' as well as 'D'. If you like it you could save yourself ££££s. :thumb:

The 718 coming to market definitely won't affect availability or prices of cars in your budget range.

The only benefit of hanging on for a while might be that you could get a Boxster a bit cheaper once the weather changes but I wouldn't bet on it.

Hi All,

So went to test drive a Cayman last wknd. It was 2.9 auto with the button shift which is not what I'm looking for but I wanted to see if I liked the car and how it felt. I absolutely loved it so dead set on the Cayman.

I've just seen this one come up on autotrader. Looks like good value for a second gen and I am looking for black or grey.

It has had 3 owners which is quite a lot for a car this age. Also it doesn't specify where the car was services.

Do you see any issues with it on face value?

Hello Scirroco R,
Well, i just pxed a car, same miles as that, black on black, pretty mint condition but with PDK and an aftermarket sports exhaust. They gave me 26k as px so that makes your one a fair deal if the condition is good, mine too had 3 owners too.
I suppose that will be on a forecourt for around 29 to 30k soon, which makes your one seem like good value if it's really a manual that you want.
Ive had manual and PDK and I much prefer the PDK but I'm a townie.

Oh and mine had sports plus and chrono, which I think adds a bit of resale value but I wouldnt let it break the deal.

As for main dealers doing discounts, if you see my other posts, i just bought a 981 S brand new black with two tone luxor and black interior and managed to haggle 12% off of the ticket price, so they do discounts. ?maybe it was the colour (I love it) or maybe because it was the last of the flat 6 models (I love them too) or maybe it was the end of the month. Or all three but yes they do discounts where i went.

Good luck with your hunting.

In my experience over the last few years of buying cars, ive found 99.9% of dealers would rather loose a sale than knock anything off the forecourt price.

When I bought my Nissan 350z Roadster, I saw one at a garage and offered him £1000 less than the £16k screen price. He refused to drop a penny so I walked. The car was stuck there for weeks and in the end they dropped the price down to £14k. When I finally found another one (the 350z HR Roadster is quite a rare car) at a Nissan main dealer 90 miles away, also for £16k, they too refused to drop a penny on the screen price, even after an hour of haggling.

My BMW, I had a little more success with. The forecourt price was something like £26k, I walked in near the end of the month. I was determined to get 15% off. The salesman laughed at that idea and offered me half a tank of diesel (£30). He then up`d his offer to a full tank of diesel (£60) as if that would swing the deal. In the end I walked, and then had the sales man calling me up every hour on the hour for the rest of the day. In the end I did get about 15% off the screen price.

A few months ago I bought a brand new Ford Kuga for the wife. That was a hell of a sales experience. I nearly throttled the sales guy several times. It took us over an hour of negotiating and the sales guy doing all the usual running back & forth to his "manager", before they even agreed to sell the car for the same price as they advertised it on their website!!!! They were more keen on trying to get us to agree to a set monthly amount rather than the actual price of the car. 3 hours of negotiations before we finally agreed on a deal. Even then the only "discount" we got was a finance contribution from Ford, so we got their finance deal, then paid it off straight away.

When I got my 997.1 Turbo Manual last week, I didnt even bother haggling. I was fortunate enough to get to view the car within hours of it appearing online and snapped it up for the full asking price there & then. The "sales person" was great and it was probably one of the most easiest sales experiences ive ever had.
