Using the search function

It must be me but whenever I use the search function on here I enter a key word and it returns every post since forever (latest 5188 posts).

I want to find what products people have used to repair leather scuffing so I enter the word 'leather' and it shows me all the posts since way back.

What am I doing wrong?

Perhaps a mod can direct me.

Thanks

Nothing. If you type a word in the search box, it will bring every post up that contains that word.

Try 3 words: leather scuff product

....and make sure you click the box 'Search for all terms'

Sarfend, it sounds like it is following your instructions.

Just like Google works (count yourself lucky, there are 622 million returns for "leather" on that search engine - excuse my delay in replying, I got held up viewing some of the results ...).

Just like Google works (as per Alex), add some more info (keywords) to your query to narrow it down.

As to how far back the search looks, this is pretty irrelevant, as it is by default returned newest first anyway (so unless you peruse to the end, you'll never find out what Moses used)

If it really irks you, just use the pull-down menu "Search previous:" to select your preferred date range.

One last tip: add an asterisk "*" as a wildcard to "root" words (ie wash* to search for all possible entries for wash, washed, washing ... erm washabi :? etc)

Alex and GT4 have already answered your query.

The main thing is to use two or three relevant key words rather than just one.

Personally I'm amazed at how quickly the system can pick up the words used. The fact that by keying 'leather' you can get so many results at the press of a button is pretty incredible.

Follow the advice above and you should be ok. :thumb:

I believe the server at 911uk Towers is now fully updated (hardware-wise) to the "bleeding edge" reel-to-reel magnetic tapes system.

No more punch cards!

....Just don't click any of the results from the Members Lounge Bar

Shouldn't your nips be inside the rings Alex?

Put on a bit of blubber have we

:dont know:

Thanks all.

The use of words in a search can definitely cause issues if not thought through. A colleague of mine in the early days of the internet innocently typed in 'Dutch Open' as he was a golf fan. Well, you can imagine some of the more interesting sites the search engine suggested. Try explaining that to the company's porn police. :judge:

I fell in to that trap at work once searching for ball cages (ball bearings housed in a cylindrical cage used in press tooling). Quite embarrassing as there was a few of us stood round my pc when I clicked the first link
