lee's 996 C4 project thread

Great thread and looking v nice.
I admit to seeing the 996 as a little "plain jane" (c4s and turbo excepted) but the aerokit makes such a difference - yours looks absolutely cracking.
Re the air com - Condensers can be bought for around £70 on eBay (new) and removing front pu is not that difficult so it is a fairly easy diy job.
Cheers
Rob

thanks for all the comments guys :thumb:

@rob that's the reason the aero kit was a must for me when looking to buy one

The clay bar seems to have made a big difference! Think i'll be giving that a go on mine! Car looks great.

Nice thread Lee

I get it!

only a tiny update but been after updating the stereo in the porka for a while now and having nearly pulled the trigger on buying a new stereo that I liked only to discover unless I changed my phone to apple it would of been a waste of time as it was apple car play based (pioneer da 120)
after a chat with an audio specialist I decided I'd wait for an equivalent android version which will be getting launched in the near future apparently! (any pioneer fans confirm or deny?)

anyway as a cheap and cheerful fix in the meantime I brought a cable off good old ebay that works a treat for £14 quid delivered it was worth a try

after following a good old youtube guide I found out it already had a lead on there that someone had cut off (dension? anyone heard of them? worth fixing it?)

the connections look a bit old school so imagine its not easy to replace these

but anyway 20 mins or so later and activating the aux mode I'm in business and can now stop buying CD's again lol

sound quality is just as good as the normal radio / CD's so cant complain
only gripe I'd have is it doesn't charge the ipod and its that old the battery dies after a couple of hours!
but think those that did charge the ipod had a stupid price tag

Lovely car. I think the 3.4 aero is the pick of the non Mezger's!

cheers mat :thumb: have to agree

and I know back a page or 2 I said I was going for the kline exhaust but when these popped up on here for a sensible price I had to give them a try

and they turned up today 8)

just waiting on my exhaust fitting kit to turn up now! and i'll be sure to do a before and after vid

and thanks steve was a pleasure doing business with you :thumb:

Well done for snapping those up so quickly! If you don't like them, let me know! :)

another small update

always thought the wheels looked a bit lost in the arches so purchased some 15mm spacers

before shots

and after

looks much better imo
not taken her for a spin yet but hoping all is well driving wise

noticed not long after fitting the new exhaust that it was blowing slightly from a slit in the exhaust flexi section (no idea if this happened in transit or while fitting or after etc) but while driving to a garage to see if this was weld able I heard it get worse and sure enough it had split all the way through

so a new section has been welded in instead of trying to bodge it back together

however now I know they are odd and if you get low enough you can just about see them its giving me ocd problems

my air con condensers were not holding pressure so been without aircon through our pathetic summer
and when alex yates pointed me in the direction of some cheap replacements I snapped a couple up

old ones

and new ones in

after seeing the state of the old ones I may be following suit with the mesh that some have fitted

and a bit of a marmite mod but I had them on my old bmw and liked them so i'll give them a whirl and see what I think

metal pressed plates

heres a couple of pics now I've fitted the pressed plates

Just to bring this back upto date...

Purchased some rss engine mounts

Had a spare couple of hours on Friday to fit the engine mounts
So take 1 .... lined everything up and then realised the only deep socket I don't have is an 18mm
Every set I have has 17 and 19 but no 18 :(
So everything put away and off to 2 branch's of halfrauds who also don't have them
Finally managed to get one from a mechanic mate
So take 2...
Now I was only fitting these as a performance modification and as far as I was concerned my mounts were in an OK condition
However as soon as I took the engines weight off the mounts oil started pi55ing straight out of one of them

At 1st I thought it was from elsewhere and I'd broken something

Excuse the filthy engine bay

Air filter removed

Secondary air pump and top bolts removed

As the only 18mm deep socket I could get was a 3/8 drive I had to get all getto with my tool so move the nuts

And this is where the next problem came
Instead of the nut coming off the whole thread came out the mount

Tried everything I could think off to shift the nut but ended up snapping the threads

It now being too late to get one my engine had to stay jacked up all night
Resumed today nipped to porsche cardiff who because they didn't have change gave me the nuts for free 8)

They also had this little beauty in there

So back to work cleaned up the bay a little ready for new mounts

New mounts in

All tightened up and back together and a bit more of a spruce up

And after a quick test drive I can report everything feels a lot more tight
Nvh levels have probably raised a little but that could be because I was driving with the stereo off etc and actually trying to listen and feel for any differences

But for anyone considering upgrading definitely get all new nuts and bolts to save having the dramas I did
