Hi all

I'm new to the forum and new to 911 ownership

I recently purchased the car from a friend and she's a great 911.
I didn't pay a huge amount, but the car seems solid, but of course isn't without some issues..
The first of which I'm hoping some nice folks on here might be able to help me with?
Essentially... Sometimes, regardless of whether the car is cold from start or if I've been driving for a while.... I find it very hard to select first gear.. But often it's not a problem at all...
The same with reverse..
But as I said before it's never consistent
Any thoughts would be much appreciated
Many thanks
Henry

Hi Henry,

That will be a 915 gearbox.

Mine was very tricky for me in first, in fact to avoid embarrassment and be 100% I had 1st gear ready at junctions I got into the habit of selecting 1st as the car was rolling to a halt, always easy then.

TBH in my ownership I never totally cracked gearchange, it was a rare thing, a car where I'd smile when I got gear changes right.

ALL the guys at the specialist I used on that car could drive it no problem, one of them took me out and did finger and thumb changes enedlessly with no problems, only for me to then try and not succeed at all!

The 'finger and thumb' change was useful advice, got me used to 'feeling' rather than 'forcing' the changes.
:)

Get it checked by someone that knows them to be sure it's set up ok, but be prepared to learn it a bit too.

The deal with these boxes is to fully depress the clutch pedal when changing gear.On later boxes you can get away with just about disconnecting drive and making a smooth change but not on the early Porsche box.

Unfortunately years of crunched changes can cause damage which is relatively expensive to fix.

If I recall mine was like that, always had to think about the change. Part of the charm of the car. Try selecting second when coming to standstill then into first.
Check the omega spring on cable is good. I did get some improvement by changing oil. A specialist oil helped, can't remember name look on impactbumpers.com the guys on there will remember

Plus one for the oil change, it helped mine (915) a lot. And practice.

One tip is to always let the revs drop to idle before attempting first from neutral, otherwise there WILL be a crunch.
