3.2 Carrera oil pressure gauge

Just returned from a trip to Le Mans in my 1985 Carrera. Great time, great run. Shame Porsche couldn't quite pull off the Win.
One problem with the Carrera - the oil pressure gauge stopped working on the way down. Needle is just stuck up at the top (maximum pressure) of the gauge. I suspect the sender but, being new to the car, I don't know where it is situated.
Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

(From fixing my oil level guage)

There is a single wiire from sender to guage.

If it is shorted to earth then the needle goes right to the top.

Open circuit it stays on the bottom.

Sender working then the resisistance between the two is the reading.
:)

When my 3.2 sender failed it failed in open circuit.

The cable has a long way to go and a short anywhere in it's length will make needle shoot up. It is largely protected most of the run though.

It makes it's way to the back of the car in the wiring loom to the rear O/S light cluster.

If you take out the light you will see this single wire then makes it's way into the arch and to the sender.

This is where it is most vunerable to chaffing metal or shorting (mine did! I replaced it from sender to light cluster).

Tip:
Remove the cable from the sender (in the wheel arch).

If needle stays up then cable is shorted. This needs fixing before you can access guage.

If needle goes down then touch it to metal and see if needle goes up. If it does then you know cable is good end to end and there is a problem with sender.

:)

Assume how the pressure guage works is the same?

Apologies, Clarkycat, for not responding earlier.
It turned out to be the oil pressure sender had given up - so a fairly simple sender switch.
Since then I have had an oil leak which required engine and gearbox out to replace crankshaft seal. And it was only a few weeks since they were out for a gearbox rebuild. These things being beyond my knowledge of 911s and flat sixes. - I have done with the E Type and several MGBs. - so it has been an expensive time at the Porsche Specialist.
But we did do Le Mans in it in between so hopefully some trouble free miles now. Good job I love it to bits!
Cheers

Still struggling to find wire...

...can't seem to find the gauge wire as mine is earthing somewhere as it stays at the top even when disconnected - frustrated.com!! :x :dont know:
